Shoes for PE class must have laces or velcro straps to hold them on their feet. No slip ons, sandals, open toes, flats, boots or rain boots please. Every PE teacher in your child's future will have the same policy and as a parent I know we all have a lot to think about just getting our kids out the door, but safety is our top priority. Correct footwear is critical for proper support, comfort and control when moving our bodies in new and different ways. As a precaution, we will hold students out of active participation if their shoes are not safe for the activities we are doing. Please learn your student's PE days and plan to wear those cute shoes and have the proper shoes for PE as well. Throughout my day I tie a lot of shoes for kids to prevent them from tripping. Please teach your children how to tie their own shoes quickly or send them with velcro straps until they learn how. When choosing a shoe for PE, choose a shoe for all around activity. Running shoes may not be the best choice because a typical running shoe is designed for running straight and my make your child roll an ankle if it has a gel cushion or if it lifts the student too far off the ground. In addition, shoes like Chuck Taylor high tops or Vans may not be a good choice either. Chucks are 1950's technology and we've come a long way since then. Vans are for Skateboarding, not running. How your child tracks in the shoes you choose can have a detrimental effect on their ankles, knees and back. Best to start them off right learning about why the shoes they wear to be active in should fit, support, and help make the activity safer! And by the way, if you're going to wear one red sock and one green sock, the sailor in me is going to insist the red goes on the left and the green goes on the right... unless you're a coxswain... then the reverse is ok. :)

Excused from active participationIf your student is injured, sick or just out of sorts please send them with a note or send me an email before 8 am on the day of their PE class. The note should explain the nature of the injury, what they can and can not do and when we can expect them to be able to return to full participation.

Try Everything!Students are expected to do everything asked of them in PE and we do a lot of different things! All we ask is that they give their best effort and show good sportsmanship and teamwork.

GRading/AssesmentsWhen it comes to grading in PE we look at several factors and grade on effort and skills.
The effort grade is based on the student doing all the warm up activities and participating the entire time in whatever activity we are doing. Their skills grade is largely accumulated by their ability to do their pathways (ex. skipping, galloping, and side to side) as well as if they are able to cross the center line. For instance, rhythmically touching their elbow to their opposite knee during an exercise we call "steam engines". We also look at various types of throwing, catching, and kicking. So much of what we do is developmental and will almost always work itself out over time, so their really isn't much to worry about. But, if we see something glaring we will be sure to be in touch with you. |
